Oakhill College steps up to the crease for McGrath Breast Care Nurses

This year, our friends at Oakhill College helped us launch our Pink Stumps Day campaign in spectacular fashion! The College has been a longtime supporter of the McGrath Foundation and incredibly, 2023 marked their 7th year of hosting a Pink Stumps Day.

“What started out as a goal of the First XI playing a game of cricket quickly became a regular event on the calendar for all. Now Cricket, Touch Football and Basketball all play on Pink Stumps Day,” said Murray, Oakhill College PDHPE Teacher.

“The cricketers have special ‘baggy caps’ which they play in for the day. We have a BBQ lunch for our junior teams who play in the local competition, while students volunteer their time throughout the day to collect donations, sell cupcakes and raffle tickets; we even ran a car wash this year. There is no shortage of people willing to assist.”

Murray introduced the idea to host a Pink Stumps Day as a way to support what he says is “a great cause”, and was inspired to give back after his mum, Michelle’s experience with breast cancer.

“The circumstances of our family changed dramatically when my mother was diagnosed with breast cancer. Like many who have experienced this, we were unsure about what was ahead for our family. The community around us were great in providing assistance but so too were the breast care nurses. Thankfully, after undergoing treatment and a double mastectomy, she has made a full recovery,” said Murray.

“I’ve discovered that almost everyone knows someone who is impacted by breast cancer but not all will know the amazing work which is done by the breast care nurses, or what funds are required to maintain this program.

“Hosting this event is about raising funds as much as it is educating the next generation to involve themselves in worthy causes that they might never see the benefit of but will positively impact the life of another individual through their service.”
