International Nurses Day 2025
Care changes lives
This International Nurses Day, we celebrate the life-changing care that McGrath Cancer Care Nurses provide to individuals and families facing all types of cancer. Their dedication and compassion make a profound difference in the lives of those navigating the challenges of a cancer diagnosis.
McGrath Cancer Care Nurses provide expert clinical, psychosocial and emotional support, ensuring that no one faces cancer alone. From diagnosis and through treatment, offering guidance and strength every step of the way.
Meet five of our incredible McGrath Cancer Care Nurses who are making an impact every day. Their dedication, expertise, and care, changes lives.
Kristyn Schilling
McGrath Cancer Care Nurse (Gastrointestinal, Genitourinary & Gynecological)
With 19 years as a specialist cancer care nurse, Kristyn joined the McGrath Foundation in late 2024, focusing on Gastrointestinal, Genitourinary & Gynecological Cancers. Inspired by the impact of McGrath Nurses in breast cancer care, she was excited to be part of expanding this support to all cancers.
Kristyn sees herself as the vital link between patients and their care teams, ensuring their needs and concerns remain a priority. “Knowing what’s important to the patient is at the heart of how I care.”

Marie Laing
McGrath Cancer Care Nurse (Lung)
With 17 years of experience, Marie joined the McGrath Foundation in early 2025, specialising in lung cancer. She supports many rural and South Coast patients who travel far from home for treatment, ensuring they feel guided and cared for.
As one of the first McGrath Cancer Care Nurses supporting patients with lung cancer, Marie values the holistic approach that puts patients first. “We provide clinical, emotional, and psychological support during one of the most challenging times in their lives—helping both patients and their families.”
Her role has also deepened her passion for nursing. “It’s inspired me to share my knowledge so patients receive the best care, education, and support possible.”

David Brock
McGrath Cancer Care Nurse (Breast)
“My goal is to ease the stress, anxiety, and fear that come with a cancer diagnosis. If my patients know they can call anytime—whether for advice or just support—then I’ve done my job.”
With 14 years in cancer care, Dave joined the McGrath Foundation in 2024, specialising in breast cancer. Inspired by family experiences, he knew from his first day in oncology that this was his calling.
As a McGrath Cancer Care Nurse, he values being there for patients throughout their journey. “This role is unlike any I’ve had before. The focus is entirely on patient care, and the training and support are second to none. I’m grateful more people with all types of cancer can now access this level of support.”

Michiko Ban
McGrath Cancer Care Nurse (Breast)
“Life-changing care starts with truly listening and understanding each patient’s needs—physically and emotionally.”
With 19 years in cancer care, Michiko joined the McGrath Foundation in 2018, specialising in breast cancer. Having worked in oncology wards in Japan before moving to Australia, she sees this work as her calling.
Michiko describes McGrath Cancer Care Nurses as a steady presence, guiding patients and families through treatment with compassion and expertise. “I help people navigate a difficult time with clarity, care, and support.”
