Flying solo: Lucy's volunteering experience

Lucy's story

“The day was just fantastic - beautiful weather, beautiful company, generous people and a great cause. I walked away thinking I’ve made a contribution. It felt really good and I’ll be back there in January.”

Tips for first-timers

Lucy has learned a few tricks at her first Pink Test that can make the day smooth and fun.

“Wear comfortable shoes, you get your steps up plus some,” she says.

“Don’t get disheartened when people say no. Smile, have a friendly attitude and they’ll come to you. It’s a great opportunity to see what the McGrath Foundation does and how generous people are.”

She says volunteering is “an opportunity not to be missed.”

Lucy wants people to know that “age is no barrier” when it comes to volunteering at the Pink Test. The 66-year-old from Cronulla volunteered for the first time this year and quickly made friends with people of all ages.

“It was recommended to partner off, there was another lady sitting on her own and when we were in the queue a young gentleman joined us,” she says.

“The gentleman and I were first timers, and the lady had volunteered before, so she knew the routine. We made a good team. We were quite good at spruiking the bandanas and by the end of the day all three of us lost our voices.”

Lucy was inspired to volunteer by a friend and by her own experiences.

“I’ve had some cancer in my family, two of my brothers passed away from it and quite a few friends,” she says.

“Knowing that the care the McGrath Foundation provides is now wider than just breast cancer is so wonderful. And that suggests that more volunteers will be necessary, as they care for a wider audience, they’ll need a lot more people to be involved to fundraise.”

Flying solo at the NRMA Insurance Pink Test could be your best decision yet. Join Lucy and hundreds of volunteers for a day of community, laughter and life-changing fundraising.

Lucy’s parting words “It is a big day and highly worthwhile. I was very satisfied with what we achieved that day.”
