Warrnambool Welcomes First McGrath Cancer Care Nurse Supporting All Cancer Types

Warrnambool and surrounding areas will receive a boost in cancer support with the appointment of the first McGrath Cancer Care Nurse caring for people experiencing any type of cancer.

The appointment of Elle Conrick is an addition to the existing McGrath Cancer Care Nurse in the area who supports people experiencing breast cancer.

With around 1 in 2 people diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime and around 181,000 people diagnosed with cancer in Australia this year, there is a substantial need for specialist cancer care provided by McGrath Cancer Care Nurses to support people across Australia with any type of cancer.

Ryan Barlow, McGrath Foundation CEO, said the new nurse will provide free care and support for individuals and their families in Warrnambool and the surrounding areas.

“McGrath Cancer Care Nurses are clinical experts who help people with cancer and their families navigate the medical system by providing clinical, psychosocial and emotional support to people with any type of cancer throughout their treatment.”

“We are honoured to provide this vital service to people experiencing any type of cancer in Warrnambool, as we are committed to our purpose of ensuring no one goes through cancer without the care of a McGrath Cancer Care Nurse,” Barlow continued.

Elle Conrick, the latest McGrath Cancer Care Nurse to join the Warrnambool region, based at Warrnambool Base Hospital, said:

“I am thrilled to step into this new role, supporting people with cancer across the South West. It is a privilege to play a role in the McGrath Foundation extending its care and help ensure that anyone diagnosed with cancer has access to care.”

- Elle Conrick | McGrath Cancer Care Nurse

Elle has been a registered nurse for over a decade and a McGrath Cancer Care Nurse since 2021, previously in a role dedicated to supporting patients experiencing breast cancer. Elle has also completed post-graduate qualifications in oncology and breast cancer nursing. Every day, Elle makes a difference by being a dependable, resourceful and comforting presence whilst supporting people through their experience with cancer.

“This role enables me to provide meaningful care for patients and their families, helping to navigate an often complex healthcare system and offering clinical, psychosocial and emotional support. My goal is to ease the impact of any challenges that may arise throughout their cancer experience and provide continuity of care," Elle continued.

There are currently 423 McGrath Cancer Care Nurses across Australia, and 83 supporting people with cancer throughout Victoria.
