International Nurses Day 2026

Care changes lives

This International Nurses Day, we celebrate the life-changing care McGrath Cancer Care Nurses provide to individuals and families facing all types of cancer.

Every day, they bring dedication and compassion, providing expert clinical, psychosocial and emotional support when it’s needed most.

Hear real stories from the people they support and see the impact for yourself below. Because care changes lives.

Dan & McGrath Cancer Care Nurse, Kelly

“The difference in care was honestly, incredible... it’s life changing.”

When Dan was diagnosed with colorectal cancer, he and his partner Simone were left to navigate multiple specialists and overwhelming information on their own. At the time, McGrath Cancer Care Nurses were only supporting families navigating a breast cancer diagnosis. Months later, while watching the Pink Test, they learned care was expanding to support all cancers. When Dan’s cancer returned, he was connected with his nurse, Kelly. She brought clarity, coordinated his care and supported the whole family, making an incredibly difficult time feel more manageable.

Meg & McGrath Cancer Care Nurse, Carissa

“Before Carissa, I didn’t have anyone to go to.”

Meg was diagnosed with a rare cancer at 34 after months of uncertainty. Treatment included radiotherapy and five surgeries, leaving her with lasting loss of movement in her foot. Alongside the physical impact, the emotional weight of cancer while raising three children was constant. When she was connected with her McGrath Cancer Care Nurse, Carissa, everything shifted. Carissa provided support that adapted to Meg’s needs, helping her navigate both the physical and emotional challenges and feel supported through it all.

Kirby & McGrath Cancer Care Nurse, Justine

“Even as a nurse myself, it’s completely different being the patient.”

Kirby, a nurse and mum of two, was on maternity leave when she found a lump while breastfeeding. Within days, she was facing a breast cancer diagnosis and everything changed. Despite her medical background, being the patient felt overwhelming. As treatment began, balancing her health, identity and family life became increasingly difficult. When she reached out to her McGrath Cancer Care Nurse, Justine, she found support that helped her feel informed, in control and not alone through it all.

Matt & McGrath Cancer Care Nurse, Jordan

“Jordan has been a blessing… you can tell he genuinely cares about how I’m doing.”

Matt’s life changed instantly when a seizure at work led to the discovery of a brain tumour. At 34, with a young family and newborn, he faced surgery, radiation and ongoing chemotherapy. The experience was overwhelming and filled with uncertainty. When he was introduced to his McGrath Cancer Care Nurse, Jordan, everything shifted. Jordan became a constant source of support, helping Matt and his family understand what was happening, answer questions and feel less alone during an incredibly challenging time.
