20 years of inspiration
Alison Szwajcer, Jane McGrath’s cancer care nurse
More than 20 years ago, Alison Szwajcer met Jane McGrath.
Alison was Jane’s breast care nurse, a humble but unforgettable presence who entered Jane’s life when her cancer returned and metastasised in 2006. The bond they formed, and the exceptional care Alison provided, became the cornerstone of the McGrath Foundation’s enduring legacy.
As the Foundation approaches its 20th anniversary, Alison reflects on her extraordinary experience both from the sidelines and now as a key part of the team.
“Jane and other patients I’ve met have inspired me with their resilience, humour, and honesty. Cancer is only one part of someone’s life, not all of it. You learn what makes them tick. You meet their families. You become a small part of their experience”

“Jane would never have imagined how big the Foundation would become. Her goal was simply to help one family. It has been truly incredible to see the McGrath Foundation grow."
Over the years, Alison hasn’t only witnessed the Foundation’s growth, she’s seen its heart carried forward by Glenn, and Jane’s best friend, Tracy Bevan. “Glenn has been nothing short of inspirational,” says Alison.
“From starting the Foundation with Jane, to leading it through its evolution. Every time he speaks to a room of patients or nurses, he builds a connection through his story.”
"And Tracy, she gives so much of herself. Whether it’s a major event or something smaller, the emotion she brings makes it deeply human. Even in her own grief, she saw beyond the loss and chose to keep Jane’s vision alive."
Now a McGrath Cancer Care Nurse and Nurse Clinical Lead, Alison continues to work with deep purpose and passion. Her goal is not only to support people through cancer but to help them live well with cancer.
