20 years of quality time with family and friends
Jo Douglas and her McGrath Cancer Care Nurse, Helen Conlon
For Jo Douglas, living with metastatic breast cancer hasn’t just been about surviving, it’s been about ‘living well’.
With the care and support of her McGrath Cancer Care Nurse, Helen Conlon, she’s had years of quality time with her family and friends– time she wasn’t sure she’d have.
Cancer has been a part of Jo’s life for almost three decades, first through gynaecological cancer in1996, then with a breast cancer diagnosis in 2007when she was six months pregnant with her son, Brodie. Jo delivered Brodie early so she could start treatment.
When her treatment was completed, she returned to life determined to focus on what mattered most – being the best mum she could be, while building her career. But when Brodie was seven the cancer came back, spreading to her liver. Jo received a devastating metastatic diagnosis in 2015.
10 years on, through various treatment pathways, a positive mindset, alongside care from Helen, her McGrath Cancer Care Nurse – Jo has created so many memories.
All moments of joy, living life to the fullest, while navigating the chaos of cancer. Jo’s son Brodie, who will soon be 18, has grown up with cancer all around him. As a family they’ve always talked about it openly, but they don’t focus on the negatives. Time with her son has been the most precious gift in the world.
“Having Helen by my side gives me the confidence to face whatever lies ahead.”

“It’s not just about me as the patient," says Jo. "My family has also been supported. When I have been very sick, Helen has had to liaise extensively with my family. I can’t imagine going through this without a McGrath Care Cancer Nurse. I can’t do this on my own – I need as much support as I can get. Having Helen by my side gives me the confidence to face whatever lies ahead.”
“Jo has faced her metastatic diagnosis with courage and determination," adds Helen. "Living fully, prioritising her dreams and goals, and even maintaining her love for netball through adapting to walking netball. Supporting people like Jo and their families is a great privilege – offering care, connection, and advocacy through such a difficult time in someone’s life.”
