“Cancer ripped through our lives and nothing’s been the same since.”
Elle & her McGrath Breast
Care Nurse Katie
My daughter was 11 and my son was 18 when I sat them down one night and told them I had breast cancer. “The first thing my daughter said was, ‘Are you going to die?’” I couldn’t tell them everything would be OK, because I didn’t know if it would be. I just promised I would do everything I could to survive. But none of us had any idea how long it would take, how tough it would be, and how it would change us all. And we still don’t know what the future will hold.
For me, the biggest struggle came after chemo. Getting used to the ‘new me’ was really difficult. That’s when I appreciated Katie, my McGrath Breast Care Nurse, the most.
I’ve been through so many physical changes, that now when I look in the mirror, I see a stranger staring back at me. Katie has helped me rebuild my life, and my sense of who I am. She showed me that my thoughts and feelings are normal and understandable, and gave me strategies to work through it. With her encouragement, I got back into training at the gym. “It’s such a relief to get advice from someone who knows what they’re talking about.”
I can’t stress enough how much difference it makes to have a McGrath Breast Care Nurse. I can’t even begin to think how people with breast cancer would cope without one.
Meet McGrath Breast Care Nurse Katie
Elle reached out to me after she received her breast cancer diagnosis. She was distressed and emotional and needed to figure out what to do next.
I feel for people who have to go through all that without expert help. It must be terrifying.
I help people cope with the fear and stress of breast cancer. The people I work with are so strong, but they can feel overwhelmed. As well as helping them through the emotional ups and downs, I help them understand the medical information so they can make the right decisions.
Like all McGrath Breast Care Nurses, I’m a specialised nurse with extra qualifications in breast cancer care. My medical knowledge means that my clients can trust the advice I give them. Breast cancer is scary enough for most people; it’s even harder with COVID-19. Families need a McGrath Breast Care Nurse now more than ever.
I feel so privileged to be able to help families get through this safely.
