Male Breast Cancer Patients Hike to Raise Funds

A man from Ashgrove, Queensland is hoping to raise $30,000 for the McGrath Foundation by trekking 22.5km from Mt. Nebo to The Gap in the outskirts of Brisbane’s north-western suburbs on Saturday 1 August.

Ken Baker was diagnosed with breast cancer in January after his doctor initially thought he had a viral infection. After receiving support from a local breast care nurse at St Andrews Hospital, Ken decided to raise funds for the McGrath Foundation.

‘I wish to show my support to the wonderful breast care nurses who looked after me with compassion and understanding when I faced one of my toughest times’, Ken says.

Upon discovering he had breast cancer, Ken was initially shocked to understand that men could be diagnosed, yet each year in Australia around 100 men are diagnosed with breast cancer.

Ken’s friend Bruce Barker runs outdoor activities company Executive Excellence Events and organised the ‘Do A Hike’ Challenge to help promote awareness of male breast cancer and raise funds for placing McGrath Breast Care Nurses around Australia.

Despite having only recently undergone chemotherapy, Ken has invited the wider community to pledge funds towards his goal and join him and his family on the hike through the bush. For those who might find the full 22.5km journey too difficult, he has arranged a 10km option.

Following an estimated 2pm finish, participants are able to accompany Ken, his family and friends for a barbeque and drinks at nearby GPS Rugby Club in Ashgrove.
