Meet the McGrath Breast Care Nurses

Breast care nurses are specially trained registered nurses who act as patient advocates, coordinating care for women experiencing breast cancer, their families and their carers. They provide accurate information, support and referral to services.

It costs approximately $350,000 to employ each full-time McGrath Breast Care Nurse over a minimum three year period.

Testimonials

My McGrath Breast Care Nurse knows how to make me feel better - she gave me confidence, she was kind, tender, a great listener and I walked away feeling fantastic. I would like to thank the McGrath Foundation as I feel as though you have sent me a shining star.

Sue Wittek

My McGrath Breast Care Nurse assisted by providing loving and caring support at a time when you feel most vulnerable and fragile. Having a McGrath Breast Care Nurse organise all the little things makes such a huge difference in creating that extra comfort. It is nice to know that she is there and is willing to sit with you and have a chat or drop in just to say ‘hello’. The support and care was greatly appreciated.

Mercedes Swanson

My McGrath Breast Care Nurse has helped me tremendously with information and making sure I fully understood about the chemotherapy. She has even sat in on a session with my oncologist.

She has been absolutely wonderful and I find I can discuss everything with her. She has been so supportive even when I have phoned in tears.

I don’t know what I would have done without my McGrath Breast Care Nurse. I live in a rural town and it was excellent to have a McGrath Breast Care Nurse here and not have the added trauma and expense of travelling to a larger city. I was able to call my McGrath Breast Care Nurse anytime – she is an 11/10.

I just want to say what a wonderful and caring McGrath Breast Care Nurse my daughter has, she is, as they say, heaven sent. The way she explained things to me about my daughter's illness has given me much relief from stress and worry. My daughter cannot speak highly enough of her. Thank you McGrath Foundation, what a fantastic job you do.

From the initial diagnosis and the shock of discovering that my partner and soul-mate, had cancer, I found myself in a place which was quite surreal. Those first weeks were less confusing than they might have been, thanks to our McGrath Breast Care Nurse. Here was a real human being with whom both of us could sit down and talk, not just about the forthcoming treatment, but about intimate matters that we believed would impact on the present and the future.

There have been times during the chemotherapy when my wife was distressed and on the point of discontinuing the treatment.  I was able to handle most of them myself, but I didn’t feel as alone as I did in the beginning because I knew that our McGrath Breast Care Nurse was only a phone call away should I need help – not just for my wife, but for ME.

It is comforting to believe that someone recognises the importance of the carer as more than just the one who gets the patient to and from appointments.  Without the extra support of a breast care nurse, we might both have given up by now.

I take my hat off to the Foundation for the marvellous progress so far, and I hope, for the sake of all those future patients, that you can continue to place more McGrath Breast Care Nurses around the country where there is need.  And on behalf of the carers whose need will be just as great, I am sure they will find, as I have, that their road will be far less arduous for having a new friend by their side.

My McGrath Breast Care Nurse has mainly assisted me in coming to terms with having cancer the second time. I had breast cancer in 2000 and felt very alone and frightened. When I was diagnosed again my MBCN was so supportive and understanding. It really helped having someone to talk to and someone who understood. The first time I was diagnosed there was nobody, the difference this time was terrific.

My McGrath Breast Care Nurse made a lot of difference in ways that are hard to describe on paper. She saved my sanity, lifted me up when I was down and she truly was my guardian angel. She kept me strong and positive. I will love her for the rest of my life – she is a blessing in my life.
Kathryn Parton

My McGrath Breast Care Nurse is fantastic. She has just the right personality to be dealing with women at such a vulnerable time - she is very caring, has compassion and empathy in bucket-loads, all backed up by excellent knowledge and skill. Her assistance in organising things, such as appointments, in the early stages was a godsend, as there are so many things to think about and organise. We are very fortunate to have her here, and we are grateful to the McGrath Foundation for the funding provided.

From the moment I was diagnosed, my McGrath Breast Care Nurse was there. While trying to remain strong for my husband and kids, she has provided me with the support to keep things as normal as possible and became my shoulder to cry on. Sometimes you just need time out for yourself and having the outside support, you are able to cry, vent and then cry some more.
Kim Basham

My McGrath Breast Care Nurse helped me through the darkest period of my life. She came to see me prior to my surgery to offer support and to answer any questions I may have had. It was so nice to know that I had support at a time when I had so many questions and was scared to death of what lay ahead. She was a Godsend to me. So you see, if it wasn’t for the McGrath Foundation and my McGrath Breast Care Nurse, I would have been floating in a sea of despair.

My McGrath Breast Care was a tremendous support to me during a very difficult time. Her kindness and compassion were very important during this stressful period of my life.
Patricia Williams

From day one, when we first went to our surgeon, our McGrath Breast Care Nurse has been invaluable to us. She has been available whenever we have attended cancer care sessions and is always available on the phone or email to ask questions. Her counselling skills and her in-depth knowledge with the ability to answer questions cannot be replaced in our opinion as we cannot always contact our doctor.
Elizabeth Nelson

I would like to thank our McGrath Breast Care Nurse for all her support for my mother who has been recently diagnosed with small cell metastatic breast cancer. She has been a tremendous link for us in getting services arranged and providing some great moral support. Thanks so much to the McGrath Foundation – without her, we would have been very lost in what to do and where to go. She has linked us with invaluable support services and shows up whenever Mum has chemo.
