Singer dares to care
Jane Kellaway is on the lookout for band members to help her in her latest venture. The Narellan Vale country music singer recently decided to donate money from her album sales to the McGrath Foundation.

She and her husband Fred had been looking to contribute to a cause "that means something" ever since their good friend Alanna Thompson died from breast cancer. Kellaway, whose grandmother also died from breast cancer, agreed to have about $5 from each sale of her album For Crying Out Loud to go to the foundation.

Kellaway said Jane McGrath's death in June pushed herself and Fred to contact the foundation and get involved. "When Jane McGrath died, Fred said he knew what we could do. We're Christians. We believe God gives you talents to use for the betterment of things. "The whole reason I got started singing was to put a smile on someone's face." Now all Kellaway needs is a band to back her at events and charity benefits for the foundation.

Jane Kellaway's album For Crying Out Loud can be bought at janekellaway.com.au If you would like to join her band: info@janekellaway.com.au.

Midlife Challenge
These men are not trained mountaineers. They’re not even un-trained mountaineers. Three of them are very scared of heights. Four have dodgy knees. Only two have previously ascended higher than the top of Crackenback chairlift. All are approaching 50, not all of them from the right side. Yet they managed to raise over $40,000 for the climb to the summit of a 6,000m Himalayan peak.

Bead it for boobs

BEADS and boobs may seem a frivolous combination but not so for a group of inspiring women in the Bay. After meeting on a recent Saturday, they came up with a beading project - named Beach Babes Beading for Boobies or BBB4Boobies - to raise money for the McGrath Foundation.

"We are making beaded squares, measuring one-and-a-half inches each, which will be sewn together to form a small quilt, which will be framed and auctioned off at a function some time early in the New Year."

"We are extremely excited about this local project and we welcome anyone who would like to bead their own individual square and have it immortalised in a work of art, while at the same time doing something very positive towards helping those with breast cancer.

Free help is readily available if you are a first-time beader. Contact Jenny on 4474 2675 or email for information.

McGrath Foundation benefits from local ingenuity

You can rely on the locals to support a good cause. With the main pitch for the weekend under water after 100mm of rain, two hugely different machines lined up to get the ground ready for play on Saturday morning. While the Cooroy cricket club's heavy roller worked its slow and steady magic, McDermott Aviation provided a Bell 205 helicopter to blow dry the pitch. Between them, the two machines had the ground ready for play on Saturday morning to the great relief of more than 100 desperate cricketers.

Players had the opportunity to win cricket gear supplied by Ozone Sports, cash prizes from Countryside Realty for sixes hit during the weekend, food provided by Hodges Bakehouse, Cooroy IGA, Richies Bakery and Cooroy Mountain Spring Water and other raffle prizes supplied by Lola G., Saya, Easy-cut concrete cutters, Espresso Mobile Cafe, Maroochydore, Sportspower and Joyce Ladley.

Following the weekend comp, the McGrath Foundation will receive over $4000 from Sunshine Coast cricketers, their families and sponsors.

Glenn said, "The amount of money pledged by many was a great surprise considering I only decided to do the run three weeks out from the event making the fund raising period very short."

Glenn also plans to run from the summit of Mt Kosciusko to Sylvania to finish at next years Relay for Life run. The theme is to run from the highest point in Australia to the lowest suburb in Sydney. It should take about a week and hopefully raise a considerable amount of money for the Foundation.

Trekkers raise funds

Glenn McGrath (centre) with Destination Outback chairman Brett McCarthy (left) and South Dubbo Rotary president Tony Speirs.
Twenty years ago a couple of Dubbo rotarians took some mates on an adventure into the outback. Instead of just a holiday they turned their epic trip into a fundraising drive for the community. Two decades on, Destination Outback- a Rotary Club of South Dubbo initiative - has raised more than $lmillion for a number of charities and this year's adventure was no exception.

The 155 intrepid explorers have returned from their 10-day expedition that covered about 2500km, and they raised almost $230,000 for a range of charities across Dubbo. Event organiser Brett McCarthy from the Rotary Club of South Dubbo said the highlight of the trip for him was meeting Glenn McGrath and making a donation to the McGrath foundation.

Mr McCarthy said a cheque for $10,000 was presented to Glen at his family's property near Nyngan. "It was fantastic. Glen McGrath is such a genuine and nice fellow, he greeted us all when we arrived at his property and had lunch with us. I'm sure the donation meant a lot to him," Mr McCarthy said. A $5000 donation will be made to AngelFlight, and further donations will be made to the Birdsville clinic and the Royal Flying Doctor Service. Mr McCarthy said his Rotary Club would identify local organisations in Dubbo that are looking for funding and make a donation to them from the money raised.

The trip started from Nyngan on Friday August 8 and the trekkers toured to the far west of the State and had a two-night stay at Birdsville in Queensland. Fifty-five vehicles, a truck and a helicopter were involved in the fundraising convoy. The travellers were from Dubbo as well as Sydney, Brisbane, Adelaide and even some from South Africa. "The trip was justfantastic, its a chance for people to camp out under the stars, drink billy tea, tell stories around the camp fire, and at the same time raise money, it was a real outback experience," Mr McCarthy said.

Pink for Liam's Mum

Twelve-year-old Liam Thatcher will be raising money for the McGrath Foundation at the Maitland hockey fields from 9.30 am on August 2, to commemorate a year since his mother's passing.
"Jen originally had breast cancer, and was later diagnosed with secondary cancer," Shane explained. "As a result, Liam has been heavily involved with fundraising and promoting awareness in the local community, especially since Jen passed away." Showing maturity beyond his years, Liam is proud to be playing his part in the fight against cancer.

"Over the summer, I arranged for everyone on my cricket team to have pink grips on their bats, and the upcoming fundraiser is building on that," Liam said. Originally, Liam and Shane had planned to sell the ribbons at Ardrossan on July 19 but, due to delays sourcing the ribbons, postponed until August 2 when all Maitland hockey teams play at home. "Organising the ribbons through The Cancer Council SA head office took longer than we thought," Shane said. "We needed a bit more time, hence the move to August 2." Despite the delay, there is still a tremendous deal of support from the community. "There are a lot of people involved with The Cancer Council SA around the area," Shane said. "We have a community branch here, which we run through the school, and there are more across the peninsula. It's a huge issue."

The Lancer Council CYY Branch members have been spreading the news, and Ardrossan and Minlaton communities have shown encouraging support. Even though Shane (a teacher at Maitland Area School) had been somewhat freer during school holidays, he has a lot on his plate, being a full-time dad for Liam, youngest daughter Riley and middle child Laura, who is autistic. "We hope to see a lot of people on the day, enjoying some hockey and supporting the Jane McGrath Foundation," Shane said. The concept of raising money to commemorate the first anniversary of his mother's passing was entirely Liam's idea, Shane says. "After going through it, I know how hard it is for families, and I just want to help," Liam said. "I definitely think mum would be proud."

Angaston cricketers, Brett and Ben Burgess organised a fundraiser for the McGrath Foundation after their mother, Joy, was diagnosed with breast cancer.
Members of the Angaston Cricket Club raised an impressive $7120.50 for the McGrath Foundation when twenty batsmen adorned their cricket bats with pink grips and sponsors donated money for each run made during the game.

The McGrath Foundation cause has special meaning for two club members, Ben and Brett Burgess, as their 51 year old mother, Joy, was recently diagnosed with an aggressive type of breast cancer.

The brothers wanted to do something positive, raise awareness of breast cancer and raise money for the Foundation at the same time, and their Mum was very proud that they came up with this great idea.

The Burgess brothers have played cricket for Angaston for a collective 35 years and have considerable batting prowess which contributed to such a great result.
