Pink for Liam's mum
"Jen originally had breast cancer, and was later diagnosed with secondary cancer," Shane explained. "As a result, Liam has been heavily involved with fundraising and promoting awareness in the local community, especially since Jen passed away." Showing maturity beyond his years, Liam is proud to be playing his part in the fight against cancer.
"Over the summer, I arranged for everyone on my cricket team to have pink grips on their bats, and the upcoming fundraiser is building on that," Liam said. Originally, Liam and Shane had planned to sell the ribbons at Ardrossan on July 19 but, due to delays sourcing the ribbons, postponed until August 2 when all Maitland hockey teams play at home. "Organising the ribbons through The Cancer Council SA head office took longer than we thought," Shane said. "We needed a bit more time, hence the move to August 2." Despite the delay, there is still a tremendous deal of support from the community. "There are a lot of people involved with The Cancer Council SA around the area," Shane said. "We have a community branch here, which we run through the school, and there are more across the peninsula. It's a huge issue."
The Lancer Council CYY Branch members have been spreading the news, and Ardrossan and Minlaton communities have shown encouraging support. Even though Shane (a teacher at Maitland Area School) had been somewhat freer during school holidays, he has a lot on his plate, being a full-time dad for Liam, youngest daughter Riley and middle child Laura, who is autistic. "We hope to see a lot of people on the day, enjoying some hockey and supporting the Jane McGrath Foundation," Shane said. The concept of raising money to commemorate the first anniversary of his mother's passing was entirely Liam's idea, Shane says. "After going through it, I know how hard it is for families, and I just want to help," Liam said. "I definitely think mum would be proud."
